Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 2, 2002

SCHUMER: EXPERTS SAY GAS, HEATING OIL PRICES IN NY COULD SKYROCKET IF THERE IS AN IRAQ WAR

If US goes to war with Iraq, average price of unleaded gasoline could jump to over $2.19 a gallon in upstate New York; heating oil prices could increase by almost a dollar per gallon

Schumer releases new analysis projecting how gas and home heating prices could increase in each New York county in the event of a war with Iraq

Schumer urges the Bush Administration to keep option of tapping Strategic Petroleum Reserve on the table, a good idea whether one is for or against war

US Senator Charles Schumer today released findings showing that New York is headed for unprecedented highs in gasoline and heating oil prices if the war on Iraq moves forward and no measures are taken to bridge likely crude oil supply gaps. Schumer urged the Bush Administration to reconsider its decision to rule out using oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), a stockpile created in 1975 to deal with oil emergencies in the United States, in the event of war to ensure that these price increases do not occur.
